Watching and Working

“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming." -Matthew 25:13

Throughout history believers have tried to determine when the Lord will return, and an ignorance of the historical folly has led people in every generation to attempt to pinpoint the time of Jesus’ coming. Some have speculated since we do not know the hour or the day, we may be able to pinpoint the month or year of His return. That completely misses the point of God’s dealing with us concerning Jesus’ return. Jesus tells us directly that no one but the Father knows the time.

Jesus begins this verse with a command: “Watch.” The challenge the Lord gives us is to be constantly and eagerly waiting for His return. Therefore, our duty is two-fold. We are to prepare ourselves for His coming, so that the Lord will receive a bride “without spot or wrinkle” (Eph. 5:27). We are also to “do business” until He returns, so that the kingdom of God is preserved and extended on earth (Luke 19:13).

As we await Jesus’ return, let us be about the Father’s business.
