A Spirit of Excellence

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” -Genesis 1:26

Man is distinct from the rest of creation. God determined that man was to have His “image” and “likeness.” Man is a spiritual being. He uniquely contains a soul and spirit. He is a moral being whose intelligence, perception and self-determination far exceed that of any other earthly creation.

These God-given differences possessed by mankind and mankind’s prominence in the order of creation imply his intrinsic worth, not only of the family of mankind, but also of each human individual. The possession of soul and spirit constitutes the essence of what it means to be accountable before God. We should never be pleased to dwell on a level of existence lower than God has made it possible for us to dwell. We should strive for excellence, for our personal best and for His highest. To do less is to be unfaithful stewards of the life entrusted to us.

Where in your life have you settled for less than God’s best? Today He wants to lead you on.
