CHANGE IS COMING
A new year has arrived and most everyone is hoping for a new start in the various ways of improving themselves. We all work hard (at least the first few weeks) to achieve our desired goals and resolutions. However, as Christ’s disciples we have an active spiritual force within us that is constantly working to improve us.
Paul, in exhorting the Corinthian church, said, “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
The New Living Translation says, “So, all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image.”
Paul invites all of us into a very special intimacy with Jesus. It is a relationship that has transforming power. It changes us from the inside out. It is Christ that works in us to desire and do God’s will. (Phil 2:13)
BECOME WHAT YOU BEHOLD
The Bible gives a context to the liberated life: “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty!” But it quickly describes exactly how the Holy Spirit works to create and sustain the freedom of His Kingdom. Study this amplification of our text:
“But we all (every one of us deciding for ourselves), with unveiled face (not hiding behind pretense or cowering from God’s dealings with us), beholding as in a mirror (which is the Word of God) the glory of the Lord (which is the Son of God), are being transformed (that is, progressing from stage to stage as a creature undergoes metamorphosis—a caterpillar to a cocoon to a butterfly) into the same image (of Jesus, our Master, Model, and Savior) from glory to glory (or from one stage of His grace and character to ever-expanding dimensions of the same) just as by the Spirit of the Lord (for it is only by His presence, power, and perfecting work that such a change can happen!).”
That change is occurring in you! The Bible says “all of us” who make Jesus our Lord and Savior are being altered to be more like Jesus. However, our transformation occurs as we behold the glory of the Lord. The Spirit Filled Bible says “beholding in a mirror” connotes “reflecting” as well as “looking into.” As we behold the glory of the Lord, we are continually transformed into the same image by the Spirit of the Lord. We then, with ever-increasing glory, reflect what we behold.
As we spend time in the face (presence) of Jesus, we see the glory of Lord. We gaze at His majestic magnificence and highly exalted splendor —the perfect and personal excellency of Christ. As we look into His face, listen to His voice and hear His heart. His glory is brightly reflected in our faces and lives because Jesus has removed the veil of sin and unbelief from us.
MORPHED TO BE LIKE HIM
The weight of His glory, exalted in worshiping the Father and magnifying His Son in the power of the Holy Spirit, impacts, reshapes, and alters our character and conduct. It liberates, releases, and loosens us from the hold of sin and self, and unleashes the ministry-life of Jesus Christ to course through our daily lives.
From glory to glory is the Word’s description of a life being progressively transformed to walk in the fellowship and blessings that were always God’s intent for us. Ever-increasing glory is yours. Scripture says that God knew you before time and destined you to be conformed into the image of His Son, (Rom 8:29) Remember, there is a promise that “when Christ appears, we will be like Him.” 1 John 3:2.
This year, spend time in worship and prayer, in the liberty and freedom of the Spirit, knowing that He is transforming you increasingly into the image of the glorious Son. Welcome the Holy Spirit in all you do. Spend time in the presence of Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to transform you continually from glory to glory. Your face, your character, your actions, and your attitudes will reflect the beauty of Jesus.
If you are willing to be freed and changed that way then you are destined for a great new year!
