Dry Times
Then Israel sang this song: “Spring up, O well! All of you sing to it—” Numbers 21:17
Praise is a cure for the “dry times” that come to every believer. Here, in Israel’s wilderness wanderings, praise to God caused waters to flow from a well. God gave the people both instruction and promise: “Gather together, and I will give water.” As they gathered in the unity and power that attends a corporate meeting, they saw God fulfill His promise to bring life—sustaining water from the well. The people’s responsibility was simply to sing and watch God work His miracle. In times of pressure, anxiety, or depression, we are not to stay alone. We gather with God’s people, especially His praising people. Regardless of our personal feelings, let us join in audible praise and sing to our well—the living God who supplies all our need. Let our song be one of thanksgiving for past blessings and of faith in God’s promises for the present and for the future. Like Israel, let us sing in our “dry places,” and watch as God overflows us with His bountiful blessings.
